Diverse student backgrounds

I am curious to know what backgrounds are the students taking this course. I am a mechanical engineer with applied math background.

Edit: so many responses! This post will provide a good corpus for analyzing student backgrounds later when the course is over. However in order to get more responses this post needs to be voted up.

I'm a junior in high school, still trying to figure out what to do afterwards. I've always been good with computers and I thought this looked like a neat opportunity to learn programming.

Well, my background doesn't matter. Just wondering if someone will translate these 395 answers (at this moment...) and make some kind of histogram (age, country, profession?). I would do it if just I had the time...

Hmm, I wonder how you would start to aggregate this data.

[tempted to try to grab the data so I can mess around with it...]

I'm a sophomore high-schooler from Idaho. I read about Udacity in Popular Science, and I looked into it. I am really busy with school and stuff, but when I have time I learn a bit from this. All the best, MacGeek.
P.S. I love Macs!!!

I'm a undergraduate cs senior. Most of my programming skills are in Java. I wish I would have seen this while I was still in high school, great opportunity to learn more about the field

I'm an Indian Sikh high school junior living in New Jersey. I've always loved programming and how things work, so naturally, I loved the opportunity to learn the basics of OOP and a new language again. Thanks!

I install garage doors. Haven't seen the inside of a classroom since high school over twenty-five years ago. Can't begin to tell you how great I think the concept for this type of learning will be.

I'm an experienced programmer (REXX, Tcl, Perl, C, Java, PHP), but I've never done Python before and I like to learn new things all the time. I'm afraid of the "ageism" of our industry and don't want to get pushed out of the job market by a young person who knows all the new languages.

ditto. I'm the software director for a small company and don't ever want to be a pointy haired boss. Being a programmer means constantly learning new skills and languages unless you want to become obsolete.

I am a librarian with some limited computer programming and html coding experience. I couldn't resist the hook of building a functioning search engine in 7 weeks. :-) Seriously, I thought this would be a neat way to better understand how a search works behind the scenes. It may perhaps serve as a gateway to augment my job skills and take a more technical direction with my career. But even if it doesn't do all that, I will learn a little more than I know now and I think it's a fun topic. I also like that it's free (!) and may be a step in making quality education more widely available to people who couldn't otherwise access it.

I have an MLIS and work at a university library primarily as the "web guy." Everything you wrote echoes my main reasons for doing this class. I definitely feel I am moving more towards the technical end of the library world, and I'm liking it. Up vote for you!

I am a musician and freelancer. I'm 35. I have an academic background in language, linguistics and similar. I never programmed in my life, and it always bugged me. So, I'm here to see if I like it, and what I can learn from it.

I can feel my brain needs rewiring in order to tackle this challenge efficiently! :)
