Can you make a list of materials needed to build a self-driving car?

Hello Udacians, today I would like to ask you about the necessary hardware to implement something approximate, not as advanced as google self-driving car of course. I did some research and I found out that some new cars brings LIDAR tech from factory like the VOLVO XC class. is there any possibility to play with the sensor to use it for our purposes? also, if someone is interested in buying a LIDAR sensor, how much does it cost? Thanks!

LIDARs are quite expensive but I've heard that a very cheap robot vacuum (USD 300+) is using something
akin to a LIDAR, and a lot of hardware hackers have hacked that device to death. The vacuum is called
Neato XV 11. Of course, I think the range of this LIDAR is only sufficient for indoor navigation
but it would be a good start to play with them.

I believe the neato has been successfully hacked (meaning it was taken apart and reverse engineered), but the sensor is not available alone yet.

Correct. But a USD 300+ for a LIDAR is still a steal. :D

But from what I've heard, the actual LIDAR itself can be manufactured for USD 30+.

The Velodyne HDL-64E which I believe the google car uses cost about 75K USD so 300 is a good deal to start :)

@Udatroid : now that is expensive. I believe the Hokuyo and the SICK lidars can be had for less than 6k USD, but still, that kind of price is still in the realm of those whose research is being funded, not the solitary joe hacker.

I agree... still very expensive, at least for me, but it's great to know about it

Well, @BayesianHorse, thanks anyway for your.... "answer"... I have a couple of questions for you... First, I have to admit that I am a newbie in this field, and that is the reason why I am here, trying to learn. The question is, what league are you talking about? are you in that league?

Second, I didn't state " I will build a self-driving car, tell me what materials I need". I ask for information, just for curiosity, to learn a little bit more.. Even Prof.Sebastian Said that he loves "Stupid" questions... Check here. I suggest you to read it. The question is, who are you to tell me my question was stupid or that I am out of the league?..."if there exists one"..

Not to mention that there is no such thing as a "stupid question", just "question". Good luck with your efforts, and be safe!

I learn faster by making too. I found this for UAV's maybe it can be hacked for class purposes.

I'll try to order it to play with. Also the LIDAR system cost should be much lower for 3rd or 4th generation devices
Open Source software is starting to appear for LIDAR so this will bring down the price
Installing This program really helped me understand how LIDAR works http://code.google.com/p/fullanalyze/

Not to sound too rude, but the way you are asking this questions indicates that you are not really ready yet for experimenting with real cars.

As to the Laser rangefinders... Maybe you can find one on Ebay and hack it. Looks like most devices are not really meant for what you want to do, but rather helping with parking etc. At the very least you'd have to mount them on a rotating gear or something

As I said, it very much sounds like you are out of your league...

I disagree completely. Udatroid is going to have a Udacity CS373 certificate. After that and with application and experimentation the sky is the limit!

for anyone who never touched any real physical device for robotics, that question is quite helpful.
