CSS viewport units compatibility

It seems vw, vh, vmin, and vmax are only compatible on some modern browsers (Opera 15, Firefox, Chrome, Blackberry 10, IE10, iOS).

What is the prevailing advise on making use of these great additions while still providing backup support for older browsers in the same stylesheet?

One Answer:

The best advice I can give is to use a backup version with percentages, but that requires careful specifying at all levels. The browser support for viewport units is actually pretty good, though; only a problem on older mobile browsers.

Remember, percentages are percentages of the parent element, which might not be the full width of the screen.
